I'm going to add a little swim diaper disclaimer for those of you who may be new to them. These types of diapers are mainly intended to hold in "solids" not liquids.  I say this because if you are say going off to swimming lessons you might want to leave the regular diaper on in the car rather than end up with a mess like I did with my first kiddo.  That's a mistake you learn from but in this case learn it from me and don't test it out yourself trust me.

  Ok for me this was the deal of the week.  As most of you know we cloth diaper at my house.  I am always on the lookout for great cloth diapers at discount prices to stretch my dollar even further.

     ( How cute are these????)

  This week I decided to bring some of Lilly's out grown diapers and the last of my maternity stash into out local consignment shop.  As luck would have it these pink beauties had just been marked down so they were $6 each so below my stock up price.  It gets even better because when I got to the register I was able to redeem a frequent shopper $10 discount.  The deal of the week 2 Bumgenius all in one cloth diapers for $2.00 total.  The only thing that will make it even sweeter is thinking of the credit I will get when the stuff I dropped off sells.  For those of you that don't know how much these usually run.  The average price for these new is $17.95 per diaper.  I saved 95% !!!

Saving on Baby Food. Home Made Sweet Potato Puree Recipe and Cost.

 

  If you are just tuning into my series on making your own baby food you may want to read the first of the series.  For this baby recipe I decided to compare the cost of buying prepackaged sweet potatoes with homemade baby sweet potatoes as well as show you how easy it is to make it at home. 

  Sweet potatoes are my daughters favorite.  What can I say she has good taste.  Lets start with the recipe and then look at the cost breakdown shall we?  All you will need for this is a sweet potato, small sheet of tin foil, a blender, food processor or baby food maker, a quarter cup of water and your oven.  If you've got all that you are ready to roll.

1.  Start by heating your oven to 350
2.  While that is heating wash your sweet potato
3.  Next you want to poke a few holes in the potato with a fork and cover it in tin foil
4.  The potato will bake for about 2 hours ( You want is good and mushy)
5.  After letting it cool for a few minutes you should be able to just pull the skin right off
6.  Into the blender it goes along with a quarter cup of water
7.  Blend it for about 30 seconds, shake or mix it up and then blend again for 30 seconds
8.  Voila sweet potato baby food.  As my six year old would say "easy peasy mom"

  For my experiment I used an 11 oz sweet potato.  The average cost of sweet potatoes in my store is .99 per lb.  So that sweet potato cost me .68.  When it was all made up the potato yielded almost 8 oz of puree.  That gives me a cost of 8.5 cents per ounce. In the stores around me the typical sale price for stage two baby food is 14.3 cents per ounce.

  While I would not say that making my own sweet potato baby food will make huge strides in my plans for an early retirement I can tell you this:  If she were to only eat sweet potatoes and she were to eat about 15 ounces a day of them ( typical for her at 6 months) I would save $26.10 in one month versus store bought. Not to shabby....

Guess who which mommy was thrilled she had printed so many Huggies coupons while they were available? You guessed it ..me!  I was able to get six packages of jumbo Huggies for $26.94 including the savings from the gift cards.  $8.99 x 6 packs = $53.94 - $17 coupons - $10 gift card = $26.94 for six packs.

Quite a few of you are reporting to me that coupons.com is offering more great Huggies coupons $2.00 off any and $3 of a pack of 60 or larger .  I do not see it under my zip code or 91321 (which is my West Coast standby zip code).  If you see it I would love to share the zip with everyone.  If you an print this it will make for an even sweeter diaper deal this week at Target.

The Cost of Cloth . How to Save on Cloth Diapers

  When people find out we cloth diaper after they get past the shock they generally have at least one of these four questions.  Where do you get those now days?  Aren't those a fortune?  That must take a ton of time and my favorite, isn't it gross?  I'm going to attempt to answer all those questions along with some diaper reviews in the next several cloth diaper video posts.  For this post and video we will be looking at the cost of cloth and how you can save even more.

   The upfront cost of cloth diapering is certainly greater than that of disposable diapering.  Depending on the type of cloth diaper you use there is a wide range of pricing just like their is a wide range of disposable diaper pricing.  Cloth diapers range from a few dollars for the basic prefold with a plastic cover and snappis or pins all the way to over $20 for the all in one one size super convenient cloth diapers.  My point is their is no way to do a direct comparison of cloth diapaering costs to disposable diapering cost their are just two many variables.  It's the overall cost that is what we will focus on.

  The average person who cloth diapers generally recommends you have at least 12- 18 diapers.  You can have more or less depending on weather you exclusively cloth diaper (we don't), how many changes you need to do a day and how often you wash the diapers.  Most people wash the diapers every two days.  This allows you to get a fuller load in so giving you the most for your dollar and saving some time.

  Lets say for arguments sake that you purchase the most popular cloth diaper I know of the BumGenius All in One 4.0 bumGenius One-Size Cloth Diaper 4.0 - Noodle - Snap.  This diaper retails for $17.95 on Amazon.  If you were to purchase 18 of these diapers you would be looking at a cost of $323.10.  That seems like a lot right?  There are other costs to include as well like a wet bag for your diaper bag will run around $10, a diaper pail liner $14.95 and then some folks choose to get flushable liners ($8.95 for 100) or a sprayer for removing "solids" ($40-60).  For this post I'm going to avoid the nitty gritty of the cost of detergent, water and electricity.  So lets say for this comparison that you just get the pail liner and skip all the rest for your beginning foray into the world of cloth diapering.  You are looking at investing $333.10 for diapers that should get you through at least two years if you purchase the ones that are one size / adjustable.

  That probably seems like a ton of money right?  Well lets look at the average cost to use disposable diapers for two years.  Here again their will be variables depending on brand, amount of changes and size of the baby.  You get less diapers in each pack as you go up in size. The average cost of a disposable diaper is .25 ( for those thrifty mommas like myself that's more than we would consider paying but still it's the average).  The average child goes through 60 changes a week in disposables.  More in the newborn stage.  Less as they get older.  So that comes to $15 per week or $1600 for two years.  That is not including the diaper pail refills.  The $333.10 is looking better right?

  This is a great week at Target for disposable diapers.  Huggies and Pampers Jumbo packs are priced at $8.99 and when you buy three you get a $5 gift card.  That is a pretty good deal just by it's self but when you pair it with these coupons it is even better.  The ad does not exclude Huggies Pure and Naturals  or Overnights which are the disposables I buy so I'm excited.  I am hoping they have some size 3 jumbo packs.  Here's how to make an even sweeter deal:

Pampers has quite a few coupons out that were sent by home mailer but nothing printable or in an insert that I could find.

My Target only allows you to use one Target coupon per like item in a transaction but you can use it with a manufacturers coupon.  My plan is to do two transactions so that I can use two Target coupons for the Pure and Naturals.  I will update this post as soon as I make the trip.  I was lucky enough to get two home mailers and print three of the other Huggies coupons earlier.

  To those not currently in the diaper trenches these are great prices and make fantastic shower gifts or donations to shelters.

How To Save On Baby Food. Homemade Pear Puree

  One of the things I have done with all three of my bambino's is I have made most of their baby food.  There are actually three reasons for this.  The first reason and the one that got me started on making my own baby food was cost.  $1.00 or more for 7 oz of food seems pretty steep to me.  The second reason is I read packages.  Even organic baby food seems to have more ingredients than I would have thought and don't get me started on the non organic kind that mixes the meats in.  It's just more than I think is necessary.  The third and now foremost reason is taste.  Have you ever eaten a stage three baby food that has meat?  If you have I bet you never will again.  Even the stage one banana is not so hot. 

  I think that the main reason people do not make their own baby food is they feel that it is inconvenient and takes to much time.  Read on to the end of this post and after the recipe I will tell you how long it took to make.  You can be your own judge on if it is worth the time or not.

  With these things in mind I ventured out into making my own baby food.  Now like I said before I do not exclusively make my own.  When there is a good deal on organic baby food that tastes good and has a minimal number of ingredients I will certainly pick it up. Note the pear I used here was not organic only because they are hard to find right now.

  Over the next few weeks I am documenting a little experiment I decided to do to see how much making your own baby food really saves you.  My thought going into this is that some fruits and veggies like bananas you will save a bunch and others may actually be cheaper to by packaged when they are on a great sale with a coupon. 

  So on with the recipe and the final numbers on baby pear puree.

 
  I find it best to use really ripe fruit so it is easy to puree and it is tastier and  does not have to be watered down with water to blend.  I realize this does not look so good but trust me it is a nice tasty pear. 

  You want to start be removing the skin.  I use a potato peeler because it tends to remove less flesh than when I use a knife.  I guess I'm to heavy handed with the knife.

 Next remove just the core of the pear.  You want to use as much of the pear as you can to maximize your savings.

  Next you want to pop that pear in the blender.  You can see from my photo that I have a baby food maker.  The baby food maker is great when you are making small batches of food which is what I typically do.  It's less clean up.  However you can do the same thing with a blender or a food processor.

  Blend for about 15 seconds and then shake up the mixture.  If you are using a blender it may be better to get a long spoon and mix it up.  Then blend for an additional 15 seconds.

  Voila!!! 3.5 oz of baby pear puree. 

Now to see how long it took and what the savings were.
